Q: Is there any support material I should view before the conference?

A: You should familiarized yourself with the conference concepts presented in these four PDF documents:

Q: Is this training a continuation of where the introductory training sessions in March left off, or will this be much more advanced?

A: It will be a combination. The combined presentations are in the Hamilton Southeastern High School library main room. We’ll have our own separate entrance, with a hallway space and alcove for kids to roam and work off energy. That is very normal for new typers of all ages. Nine year olds get a special dispensation for being energetic.

We’ll split into two groups in adjoining rooms when working on typing form and ability. A classroom that adjoins the library and hall are where the new typers will be.

Q: If it is the latter, what would we need to do to be ready or caught up for this training?

A: Nothing to catch up with. The background laid at the last training was critical to be able to absorb more of this next one. We are concerned more for people who haven’t had the last and are coming to this without orientation or proper preparation. They’ll be getting more form and not have the basic substantive background. Anyone that attended the March training already been has that needed background.

With this being a 2-day workshop, some parents are concerned about their child will handle the long hours involved. As one parent asked: Our son did a great job on the 1 day program, but we had to take a 1 hour break and go to the park. What will the schedule be like for the 2 days?”

A: Everyone has this issue with kids. When people go to Syracuse for training and conferences they have the same issue. Our best advice is that you do what you can do, and let the child be himself or herself. He’ll be with people who get him, and can relate to his/her working on something they has wanted. He will also want to show off for you. So do what you can do.

As for the schedule, the tentative plans are:

  • Saturday will probably be 9 to 4:30 or 5, with an hour break for lunch.
  • Sunday will likely be 10 to 5, with an hour lunch break.
  • You are on your own for lunch. As you can see on the map displayed, there is a wide variety of restaurants near both Hamilton SE High School and the Cambria Suites Hotel. Menus for several of them will be available at the conference.Donato’s can order in extra GFCF crust in anticipation of our group. If you would like that option, please contact us before April 15th so that we can inform the restaurant of our needs.

Is there a possibility that my child could be there for the practice parts, and then go do something else during the “teaching” parts?

A: Sure. Play it by ear. With the hallway next door and a kitchen area, there are places to unwind. Being at a high school, we’ll be in a hallway and with an entrance reserved for us, but there will also be grounds we can use, if it’s a nice day. The hallway is pretty big, too.

    Will there be food provided?

A: Light snacks, including gluten free, and drinks will be available throughtout the conference. You can also bring your food and beverages, too. A refrigerator and microwave will be avaialable in the kitchen attached to our conference area. These snacks are for during the conference only, so you will need to provide your own breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

Do most parents bring their children for this entire training? And if so, how do they manage hearing new information and “entertaining” their children at the same time? “He is only 9, so he still has kid energy. ;)”

A: Yes, just as at Syracuse. And then you hang out. Coming in and out is fine.

The children will probably have a lot of questions themselves, and they’ll be free to ask them. Extra energy is not a problem. If and when they need to get into the hallway to chill, it’s right next to where we will be. Restrooms are in that hallway, too.
