Syracuse Autism Conference: Behavior is Communicative… But There Is More to Say than “I Am Mad”

Co-hosted by Syracuse University School of Education’s Institute on Communication and Inclusion (ICI) and the University of New Hampshire Institute on Disabilities, the Autism Summer Institute is an annual conference that brings together FC typers, parents, facilitators/trainers, and educators for an educational and engaging journey, with workshops, presentations, panels and more.

Our previous post in this series about the 2012 ICI Autism Summer Institute, Speak Out! / How People with Autism Achieve Independent Communication, discussed current research on how to think about speech development (strand A4,) and best practice strategies used to teach people with autism to point and eventually type independently (strand A5.)

Presentation: Behavior is Communicative…But There Is More to Say than “I Am Mad” (Strand A6)

Presenter: Darlene Hanson, Master Trainer, and Typer Sue Rubin, subject of the Academy Award nominated documentary Autism Is a World

This session looked at how people with significant behavioral needs, even those with limited communication skills, can learn to problem solve and be a part of their own support team. When we develop communication systems that promote problem solving, we enable individuals to solve some of their own situations and develop the coping skills to self-advocate and expand their opportunities.
