Syracuse University’s 2014 Autism Summer Institute Program Information – Registration Now Open

Each year, the Syracuse University School of Education’s Institute on Communication and Inclusion (ICI) and The National Center on Inclusive Education at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Institute on Disability co-sponsors the Autism Summer Institute in collaboration with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN). The annual Summer Institute is an educational and engaging journey, with workshops, presentations, panels for parents, FC users, educators, and more.

The theme of the 2014 Autism Summer Institute is Envisioning the Future: A New Disability Narrative, which will be hosted in Syracuse by the ICI on Monday, July 28 – Wednesday, July 30. All presentations, workshops and events will take place at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center.

ICI 2014 Summer Institute Program Information

The 2014 Autism Summer Institute program will feature:
  • Keynote addresses by:
    • Naoki Higashida, author of The Reason I Jump: One Boy’s Voice from the Silence of Autism and featured in “Wretches & Jabberers.”
    • Stephen Kuusisto, Syracuse University professor, poet, and author of Only Bread, Only Light and Planet of the Blind.
    • Lydia Brown, activist and scholar, named a Champion of Change for the Americans with Disabilities Act by the White House.
  • Workshops:

  • Panel discussions by FC users from around the country, as well as family members, facilitators, and K-12 and university educators.

    • Lexical analysis
  • Film Screenings: movies made by and featuring individuals with disabilities.
  • Skill Building training workshops for FC users and facilitators.
  • Opportunities to meet, type and talk, discuss, laugh, and learn with FC users, families, and educators from across the country and around the world.
