Hacking Autism: Developing Technology to Unlock Voices of Children with Autism
Hacking Autism, an Autism Speaks initiative sponsored by Hewlett-Packard (HP,) is devoted to unlocking the voices of children with autism through technology.
Hacking Autism seeks to facilitate and accelerate technology-based ideas to help give those with autism a voice. When touch-enabled computing was introduced to the world, no one could have anticipated that this technology might help open up a new world of communication, learning and social possibilities for autistic children. Yet it has.
iPad apps have been used to help individuals on the Autism Spectrum for a while now, but there are a lot of apps that need to be developed to help individuals on the autism spectrum. HP and Autism Speaks created a "hackathon" to bring developers together to "hack away" to develop mobile apps for autism. Representatives from Intel and Disney were there as well.
A lot of cool iPad apps were demoed at the hackathon. Autism apps developed ranged from social stories apps to augmentative communication apps. The developers there really got excited by the autism cause, as a lot of nerds in silicon valley have family members on the autism spectrum.
